Following the United States, Britain has decided to deploy its military assets in the Mediterranean to assist Israel in the ongoing clash against Hamas.
After the United States deployed its largest aircraft carrier Gerald R.Ford to assist Israel in the ongoing clash against Hamas, Britain’s defence secretary has ordered the deployment of the UK’s military assets in the Mediterranean sea to deter escalation of the ongoing clash. UK Defence Secretary Grant Shapps said, “The monstrous terrorist attacks committed by Hamas in recent days have proven why the UK must support Israel’s absolute right to self-defence and deter malign external interference. No nation should stand alone in the face of such evil and today’s deployment will ensure Israel does not.”
Shapps added, “After Saturday's terror campaign and rampage by Hamas in Israel, I have authorised the deployment of UK military assets to the eastern Mediterranean The Royal Navy task group, RAF patrols, and wider support will bolster regional security, deter escalation and aid humanitarian efforts.”
According to reports, the UK will be deploying P-8 Poseidon reconnaissance aircraft and two Royal Navy ships – the Royal Fleet Auxilary (RFA) Lyme Bay and RFA Argus. “Three Merlin helicopters and a company of Royal Marines will also be on standby to deliver ‘practical support’ to Israel and partners in the region, and "offer deterrence and assurance", the Independent reported.
