Alabama shooting: 4 injured in shootout on busy interstate over alleged stolen car

Two of the injured are in critical condition, according to the police

The motive behind the killing was not immediately known

Four people were injured in a shootout on a busy interstate in the US state of Alabama on Friday, said local reports. Police said the deadly shooting was the result of a confrontation over an allegedly stolen car.

Two of the injured are in critical condition, according to the police. The shooting occurred around 4.40pm on southbound Interstate 59 near the 20th Street Ensley exit in Alabama's Birmingham.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald told the media that a group of individuals who found their alleged stolen car began chasing that vehicle and a shootout ensued between the two groups.

Two men who were in the allegedly stolen car were shifted to UAB Hospital by the Birmingham Fire & Rescue after they suffered life-threatening injuries, reported ABC News. Two other men who had minor injuries went to the hospital on their own, the officer added. A woman who is reportedly a person of interest has been detained.

The officer said the group who spotted their alleged stolen vehicle should have called 911 instead of taking it upon themselves to confront the other party.
