A pro-Palestinian protester self-immolated outside the Israeli consulate in USA's Atlanta on Friday. A security guard who attempted to intervene to stop the extreme act suffered burn injuries in the incident, Atlanta authorities told the press. The hospitalised protester's condition is said to be critical.

The protester, whose identity remains undisclosed, arrived at the office building of the Israeli consulate about 12.15 PM, reports said. The man, who had a Palestine flag in his hand brought gasoline with him -- indicating that the self-immolation was pre-meditated.

The security personnel's condition was not immediately clear, The Guardian said in a report. “We believe this building remains safe, and we do not see any threat here,” the report stated Atlanta police chief Darin Schierbaum as saying.

Meanwhile, the Red Cross chief told the press that the renewed Gaza fighting has turned intense. Gaza's health ministry was quoted as saying by Reuters that at least 193 Palestinians have been killed and 650 wounded since the truce ended on Friday.

Israeli warplanes and artillery bombarded Khan Younis in the south of the Gaza Strip on Saturday, hitting mosques and homes and close to a hospital. Over 15,000 Palestinians have lost their lives since the start of the war.
