Maldives leader calls for Muizzu’s removal amid ongoing tensions with India

Amid the ongoing Maldives-India tensions, Maldives Parliamentary Minority leader Ali Azim called for the removal of President Mohamed Muizzu. Azim's remarks come after some ministers made derogatory comments against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Azim urged a vote of no confidence motion against Muizzu.

“We, d Democrats, r dedicated to upholding d stability of the nation's foreign policy n preventing d isolation of any neighboring country. R u willing to take all necessary steps to remove prez @MMuizzu from power? Is @MDPSecretariat

prepared to initiate a vote of no confidence?” Azim posted on X.

India has strongly raised the matter with Male over the derogatory remarks against PM Modi by some ministers with the Maldives government. Taking action against the ministers, Maldives government had suspended three ministers over their insulting comments.

“All government officials responsible for the comments have been suspended from their post effective immediately,” said Ibrahim Khaleel, spokesperson for the president of Maldives.

A massive row was triggered after derogatory remarks surfaced the social media.

PM Modi visited Lakshadweep on Jaunuary 2 and encouraged the Indians to visit the island nation and boost tourism. While sharing the pictures during his visit, PM noted that "For those who wish to embrace the adventurer in them, Lakshadweep has to be on your list."
