Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu is likely to face an impeachment motion soon after the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) claimed that it has enough signatures to file the proceedings, according to local media.

At least 34 members that includes Parliamentarians from the MDP and the Democrats have backed the motion to impeach the president, said reports by Adhahdhu, a Maldivian news website.

The latest reports comes a day after pro-government MPs and opposition lawmakers clashed in the Maldivian Parliament over the approval of four members of Muizzu's cabinet.

MDP withheld parliamentary approval for the four cabinet members -- Attorney General Ahmed Usham, Minister of Housing, Land and Urban Development Dr Ali Haidar, Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, and Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed -- ahead of the voting.

Following this, pro-government MPs initiated a protest, obstructing the parliamentary sitting from proceeding, said local media reports. Security has been beefed up in the Parliament following the skirmish.
