After an extensive search, the missing British TV presenter Michael Mosley's body was found on a Greek island on Sunday morning. Mosley had gone missing on June 5 after setting off on a walk leaving his wife on the Agios Nikolaos beach.

According to Greek police, Dr Mosley's body was found on a rocky coast by a private boat.

Lefteris Papakalodoukas, the Greek island's mayor, said that he was on a boat with other media persons when the body was seen above the Agia Marina beach. "We zoomed with the cameras and saw it was him," he told The Associated Press.

A search operation was launched by the police after he was reported missing by his family. He has been missing for around five days amid high temperatures.

The effort has included firefighters, dogs, helicopters, drones, local people and officers from Symi and outside the island. His four children and wife, Clare Bailey Mosley, also had joined the search team on the island.

In a statement, Mosley's wife said that her husband took the wrong route on a hike and collapsed in a place where his body couldn't easily be seen.

Michael was an adventurous man, it's part of what made him so special, said Clare. "It's devastating to have lost Michael, my wonderful, funny, kind and brilliant husband. We had an incredibly lucky life together. We loved each other very much and were so happy together," she added.

She thanked the people of the island of Symi, who she said worked tirelessly to find him.

Some of these people on the island, who hadn't even heard of Michael, worked from dawn till dusk unasked, she said. My family and I have been hugely comforted by the outpouring of love from people from around the world. It's clear that Michael meant a huge amount to so many of you, she said in the statement.

Mosley is famously known for his 2013 book, The Fast Diet, which he co-authored with journalist Mimi Spencer. He studied medicine in London and qualified as a doctor. However, for the last two decades, he has been a journalist, author and presenter. He was known for his TV programmes including Trust Me, I'm a Doctor.

The book proposed the so-called 5:2 diet, which promised to help people lose weight quickly by minimising their calorie intake two days a week while eating healthily on the other five.

Mosley has introduced a rapid weight loss programme and has made a number of films about diet and exercise as well.
