A 59-year-old Indian American man died last Sunday after being punched in the face by a 41-year-old man at an Oklahoma City motel. The incident happened on Saturday as the deceased, Hemant Mistry, asked the suspect, Richard Lewis, to leave the motel premises.
Police were called Saturday night to respond to an alleged assault at a motel. Mistry was in the process of asking Lewis to leave the property when Lewis allegedly punched Mistry one time, knocking him unconscious, The Oklahoman quoted police officials.
Though Mistry was rushed to the hospitalised, he died a day later as a result of his injuries. The accused was later found at a nearby hotel and was immediately arrested. He was being held on a $100,000 bond at the Oklahoma County jail on an aggravated assault and battery complaint.
The investigation is ongoing.
This is the second such incident last week. A 32-year-old Indian national was shot dead during a robbery at a convenience store in Dallas, on June 21. Dasari Gopikrishna, who came to the US eight months ago, was killed at a convenience store in Pleasant Grove, Dallas.
Police have arrested 21-year-old Davonta Mathis for murdering Dasari Gopikrishna. Mathis allegedly walked into the store, approached the counter and shot Gopikrishna. He stole items before running away, police said. Though Gopikrishna was taken to the hospital in critical condition, he later died.
In March, a 34-year-old trained classical dancer from India and a student of Washington University, was shot dead in St Louis, Missouri. Kuchipudi and Bharatnatyam dancer Amarnath Ghosh, who migrated to the US from Kolkata last year to follow his dancing dreams, was shot several times near the border of St Louis' Academy and Central West End neighbourhoods. He died on the spot.
