An attacker who fired a crossbow at a police officer guarding the Israeli embassy in Belgrade was shot dead on Saturday.

According to Serbian news agency Tanjug, the police officer is in serious condition and is undergoing surgery.

Interior Minister Ivica Dacic had called the incident a "terrorist attack against Serbia". According to the Israeli foreign ministry, no embassy employees were wounded.

The police officer was hit in the neck with an arrow and he had fired several shots at the attacker, killing him, said Dacic. "This is a terrorist attack against Serbia...Several people linked to the incident had been arrested," he said in the statement carried by Tanjug.

"There are some indications that they (those arrested) are already known to security services and we are talking about the Wahhabi organisation, but that is not confirmed," Dacic said.

Meanwhile, Israel's foreign ministry said there had been "an attempted terrorist attack in the vicinity of the Israeli embassy in Belgrade."

"The embassy is closed and no employee of the embassy was injured. The circumstances of the incident are being investigated," the statement read.

Since the Gaza war, Israel-affiliated institutions across the world have been on high alert for attacks and protests.

The police officer, who was shot, was in a guard house when the attacker fired the arrow. The attacker had approached the guard house several times enquiring about the way to the museum. He carried a bag from which at one point he took the crossbow and shot the guard, Dacic said.

In 2009, a Serbian court sentenced four Muslims, followers of the puritanical Sunni Wahhabi sect, to prison for plotting to attack a football stadium in the southern town of Novi Pazar, the capital of Serbia's Sandzak region.

An investigation has already begun on the incident.
