The Pakistan government has decided to ban former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) party alleging anti-national activities. The government’s decision comes soon after the Pakistan Supreme Court granted relief to PTI in a reserved case.
The government said they have sufficient evidence to ban the party of jailed former prime minister. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar announced that the federal government has decided to ban the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), alleging that the former ruling party was involved in anti-state activities, The News International reported.
Tarartold presspersons, “In view of the foreign funding case, May 9 riots, and the cipher episode as well as the resolution passed in the US, we believe that there is very credible evidence present to have the PTI banned,” Dawn reported. “You tried to damage the country’s diplomatic relations for the sake of your political interests and went on to get a resolution passed against Pakistan in the US,” Tarar added.
The information minister said they will approach the Supreme Court against the verdict in the reserved case. The apex court had held the party was eligible for reserved seats for women and minorities and acquitted him in the illegal marriage case in which his third wife was also named accused.
Imran Khan has been lodged at the Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi on account of multiple cases against him. Tarar said that clear evidence was available to impose restrictions on the party and the government would initiate proceedings against the party.
