With Sheikh Hasina resigning as Prime Minister and fleeing to India, Bangladesh Army chief General Waker-Us-Zaman has taken over the reins of the interim government. This comes a little over a month after he was appointed the country's army chief.
Zaman on Monday announced that the Army will take over the government following discussions with representatives of all parties. He also urged the protesting students to stay calm and go home, adding that there is no need of curfew or emergency in the country.

Who is General Waker-Us-Zaman?
General Waker-Us-Zaman, aged 58, was appointed the Bangladesh Army chief on June 23 for a three-year term. He is married to former Army chief General Muhammad Mustafizur Rahman's daughter Sarahnaz Kamalika Zaman.
Born in 1966, he has an experience of three-and-a-half decades. He completes his masters in Defence Studies from the National University of Bangladesh as well as from King's College, London. Earlier he was the Chief of General Staff and oversaw Bangladesjh's UN peacekeeping missions, military operations etc.
He has also worked closely with Hasina, serving as the principal staff officer at the Armed Forces Division under the PMO.
