Bangladesh: 20 Awami League leaders found dead, Hindu temples, homes vandalised

Leaders of the student protests have urged people not to attack the Hindu minority

Days after ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, reports emerged that 20 leaders of her Awami League party were found dead and Hindu temple, homes and businesses were vandalised in the riots.

Leaders of the student protests have urged people not to attack the Hindu minority in the country. The attacks against the minority comes as Hindus traditionally supported Hasina's Awami League. Mobs have also targets police stations and prisons.

According to Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, around 200 to 300 homes of the minorities and 15 to 20 temples were attacked since Monday. Around 40 people have also been injured.

All Indian diplomats are reportedly staying at the Indian High Commission office in Dhaka while non-essential staff and their families were evacuated from the consulates in Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna and Sylhet.

Meanwhile, security agencies are on alert on the Bangladesh border to track illegal entry of people into Indian territory. Air India brought 205 people, including six infants, to from Dhaka to Delhi in a chartered flight amid operational challenges on Wednesday morning.

According to officials, there are around 19,000 Indians in Bangladesh, including 9,000 students.

Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has been appointed as the leader of the interim government with the support of the military. However, the violence is still continuing in several parts of the country. Around 300 to 400 bank officials have forced four deputy governors of the country's central bank Bangladesh Bank over corruption allegations.
