Bangladesh's newly appointed security official on Monday said that the main challenge for the interim government ahead is improving the law and order situation in the country.

While talking to the media, Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury emphasised the urgency of addressing the security concerns.

"Our main challenge at the Ministry of Home Affairs is law and order. We are focused on improving the situation as quickly as possible," Chowdhury was quoted by UNB news.

Brig Gen (retd) M. Sakhawat Hussain was replaced by Lt Gen (retd) Chowdhury amid criticism of his conduct by student leaders.

Chowdhury also said that the government has requested additional support from the UN in tackling the Rohingya crisis.

Bangladesh witnessed massive protests against the Sheikh Hasina-led government. Initially, the protests by students began as a quota reform movement, but later it took shape by demanding Hasina's resignation.

Hasina was forced to step down amid violence in the nation. Over 300 people died in the protests since June. Hasina resigned and fled to India on August 5.

An interim government was formed with Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus as its Chief Adviser. The interim government has transferred the chiefs of 32 police stations in Dhaka and another 18 other officers-in-charge.

Meanwhile, two new murder cases were filed against Hasina. The case pertains to the killings of two people during the quota reform protests in the country.

This raises the number of cases filed against Hasina after her ouster to 15.
