The six bodies were found in a tunnel in Rafah, a statement released by White House said. One of the slain hostages was identified as Israeli-American citizen Hersh Goldberg-Polin.

"With broken hearts, the Goldberg-Polin family is devastated to announce the death of their beloved son and brother, Hersh," read a statement released by the family.

Hersh's family made headlines after his parents met with world leaders, seeking help in getting him released. The parents had also addressed the Democratic National Convention in August.

Others were identified as Carmel Gat, Eden Yerushalmi, Alexander Lobanov, Almog Sarusi, and Ori Danino.

This comes after many bodies of hostages were returned from Gaza following which families have accused the government of failing to secure an agreement with Hamas to return them safely.
