Former United States President Donald Trump has expressed support for a proposed constitutional amendment in Florida that would legalise recreational marijuana use in the state.

"Personal amounts of marijuana will be legalised for adults..whether people like it or not," said Trump in a Truth Social post on Saturday.

He highlighted that someone in Florida, the state where he resides, should not be a criminal when it is legal in so many other states.

"We do not need to ruin lives and waste Taxpayer Dollars arresting adults with personal amounts of it on them," Trump added.

Trump had called for the state's amendment 3. He will be casting a vote for the proposed amendment in November, which would allow adults--above the age of 21--to legally buy and use marijuana without a medical card.

However, growing marijuana independently would still be illegal and individuals cannot possess more than three ounces for personal use.

After Trump’s vocal support for cannabis, Florida’s governor and Republican Ron DeSantis has slammed Trump's recent support for 'drugs'. "This is bad policy and even worse constitutional law," DeSantis said.

DeSantis has said he opposes Amendment 3 because of the smell and has claimed that people would be “able to bring 20 joints to an elementary school”.

Meanwhile, Trump stressed lawmakers to implement regulations that would ban the use of marijuana in public spaces "so we do not smell marijuana everywhere we go."

Most of the US states now allow medical or recreational consumption of marijuana. According to a recent study, 24 states and the District of Columbia have legalized the recreational use of cannabis in recent years.

The Florida amendment requires 60% voter support to pass. And public opinion polls show that a majority of Florida voters favour the measure.

Along with Florida, voters in South Dakota and North Dakota will also decide ballot initiatives proposing to legalize recreational marijuana in the November polls.
