PM Modi visits Singapore semiconductor facility with counterpart Lawrence Wong | Watch

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the semiconductor facility of AEM Holdings Ltd in Singapore on Thursday, the second day of his two-day visit. The Prime Minister also signed four MoUs and elevated the bilateral ties with Singapore to a "comprehensive strategic partnership."

On Thursday morning, Modi and Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong  visited the facility and interacted with the staff. They explored synergies between the two countries in semiconductor manufacturing. Modi is also slated to meet those in the country's semiconductor ecosystem. 

The Prime Minister's visit to Singapore hold significance since the island nation has a well-developed semiconductor industry and India is looking to develop a vibrant semiconductor ecosystem.

The sector can also enhance the ties between both countries, including in talent development as Singapore universities have customised courses for the semiconductor sector. India could also learn the best practices of  managing semiconductor industrial parks. 

Singapore contributes to around 10 per cent of global semiconductor output and the sector contributes to 8 per cent of Singapore's economic growth.

Modi said Singapore is not only a partner nation but it is an inspiration for every developing country. "A new chapter in - ties: Comprehensive Strategic Partnership established. PM @narendramodi and PM @LawrenceWongST held a productive meeting in Singapore today," Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a post on X after the meeting.

"The leaders agreed to elevate the - ties to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. They extensively reviewed various facets of the bilateral relationship covering areas of Advanced Manufacturing, Connectivity, Digitalisation, Healthcare & Medicine, Skills Development and Sustainability," he said.

The Prime Minister also hopes to create "many Singapores in India." " I am happy that we are working together in this direction. The ministerial roundtable that has been formed between us is a path-breaking mechanism," he said.

Both countries will partner up in skilling digitalisation, mobility, advanced manufacturing, semiconductors, Artificial intelligence (AI), healthcare, sustainability and cyber security. 

Modi received a ceremonial welcome at the Singapore Parliament House. He also signed the visitor's book there.  The Prime Minister will also call on President Tharman Shanmugaratnam.
