Indian official found dead in Washington DC days before PM Modi's US visit

The external affairs ministry is in touch with all relevant agencies and members of the family to ensure the swift transfer of the mortal remains to India

An Indian official was found dead inside the embassy in Washington, DC, on Wednesday. The death was confirmed by the Ministry of External Affairs on Saturday.

Reports said the US Secret Service and the local law enforcement are probing different angles, including suicide.

The ministry released a statement, condoling the death. "With deep regret, we wish to confirm that a member of the Embassy of India passed away in the evening of 18th September 2024. We are in touch with all relevant agencies and members of the family to ensure the swift transfer of the mortal remains to India," it said.

No further details were immediately revealed by the embassy or the ministry. "Additional details regarding the deceased are not being released out of concern for the family's privacy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family in this time of grief. We thank you for your understanding," added the statement.

The shocking incident comes as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a three-day visit to the US. He is scheduled to attend the Quad summit in Delaware and address the 'Summit of the Future' at the UN General Assembly in New York.
