After the US presidential debate between Democratic candidate Kamala Harris and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, up next is the vice presidential debate.

Democrat Tim Walz and Republican J.D. Vance will face off on Tuesday (October 1) in a 90-minute debate, hosted by the CBS News in New York City.

The debate will take place at 9 pm ET (0100 GMT on October 2) at the CBS Broadcast Center by anchors Noah O'Donnell and Margaret Brennan.

The recent poll trends, reportedly, give an edge to Tim Walz. Ohio Senator and the Republican vice presidential candidate Vance is less popular among voters compared to his Democratic rival.

During the debate, Walz is likely to try to appeal to the voters by targeting Vance, as Harris successfully did in her debate with Trump.

Walz had earlier criticised Vance's Midwestern credentials and ridiculed his 2016 memoir 'Hillbilly Elegy' for its depiction of rural America.

At Walz’s first rally as vice presidential candidate, he had hit out at Vance by saying, "Like all regular people I grew up with in the heartland, J.D. studied at Yale, had his career funded by Silicon Valley billionaires and then wrote a bestseller trashing that community."

Known for his ‘liberal’ views, Walz as Minnesota governor brought in a progressive agenda including free school meals, paid leaves for workers and tax cuts for the middle class.

On the other hand, Vance needs to strive harder to appeal to the voters. Vance faced a major backlash over his comments on Harris and other Democrats in 2021 as a ‘bunch of childless cat ladies’.

The recent false claims that Haitian migrants in the Ohio city of Springfield were eating pets were also criticised.

"The big difference between conservatives and liberals is that ... no one has tried to kill Kamala Harris in the last couple of months and two people now have tried to kill Donald Trump in the last couple of months," Vance had said.
