Former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has made a shocking claim that the head of the Iranian Secret Service Unit himself was a Mossad double agent.

Ahmadinejad made the stunning claim in an interview with CNN Turk amid reports that it was an Iranian 'mole' who informed Israel about Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah's arrival at Hezbollah's underground headquarters.

Ahmadinejad further claimed that a further 20 agents in the Iranian intelligence team tasked with monitoring Israeli intelligence activities were Mossad double agents. These double agents were providing Israel with sensitive information on the Iranian nuclear programme, he alleged.

However, it is not clear if these people were instrumental in Israel receiving the key intel about Hezbollah's hiding place in Beirut that resulted in an airstrike that killed the militant chief.

Hours before Nasrallah was killed in an airstrike, an Iranian mole had reportedly alerted Israeli authorities of his location. It added that the mole had alerted the Israeli sources that Nasrallah would be in the building to attend a meeting with several top members of the organisation.

Nasrallah's killing was also a direct result of Israel building an intel network to target the militant group after its 2006 war with the Iran-backed group. As a result of the efforts, Mossad's Unit 8200, the signals intelligence agency, built cutting-edge cyber tools to better intercept Hezbollah’s cellphones and other communications, reported The New York Times.

The report added that Mossad also created new teams within the combat ranks to ensure that valuable information was quickly passed on to soldiers and the Air Force. Israel also developed and deployed more drones and satellites over Lebanon to photograph Hezbollah strongholds and document even the smallest changes to buildings.

The newspaper added that Israeli leaders had information about Nasrallah's hideout for several months and decided to strike at him last week because they believed they had only a short window of opportunity before the Hezbollah leader disappeared elsewhere.
