Melania Trump in her upcoming new memoir describes how she made her husband, then president Donald Trump, drop the hardline immigration policy and reveals her stand on abortion rights.
The controversial immigration policy under which migrant children were separated from their parents created a domestic and international uproar.
Emphasising the trauma it was causing these families, Melania said, "This has to stop". The policy ended on 20 June 2018.
The former first lady's memoir will be published in the US next week.
Also, Melania defended abortion and reproductive rights. She had pointed out that a woman has the right to an abortion, while Donald Trump backed the ability for the US states to restrict the procedure.
"Restricting a woman's right to choose whether to terminate an unwanted pregnancy is the same as denying her control over her own body. I have carried this belief with me throughout my entire adult life," Guardian quoted Melania as saying in the memoir.
Immigration issues and abortion rights are key topics discussed and debated in the United States elections 2024. The elections will be held on November 5, when the Americans will choose between Republican Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.
In the memoir, Melania writes about "disagreements" between her and her husband. Though political disagreements were part of their relationship, both chose to address them privately rather than publicly.
"I found our discussions more productive when we could have a quiet dialogue at home, out of the public eye."
She also mentioned that before discussing any crisis with him, she used to educate herself on the topic or situation.
"Children being held in overcrowded detention centres and in absolute squalor...raised serious questions about their health and well-being. The lack of a clear plan for reuniting families and the absence of a definitive policy on these separations only added to public outrage. I felt strongly that the situation demanded urgent attention and action."
"As an immigrant myself, I intimately understand the necessary if arduous process of legally becoming an American," she says.
Melania, born in Slovenia, became a US citizen in July 2006.
However, the memoir does not address the allegations of Donald Trump's sexual encounter with Stormy Daniels or any felony charges regarding hush-money payments.
Melania's visit to the southern border and the controversy surrounding it were also mentioned in the memoir. Her second visit to meet the desperate migrant children at the southern border triggered controversy over a jacket she was wearing that day saying, "I really don't care, do U?"
"I was determined...not to let the media's false narratives affect my mission to help the children and families at the border," she writes.
