Amid diplomatic standoff, India has informed Canada that Sandeep Singh Sidhu aka Sunny Toronto who works as a border police official in Canada is promoting terrorist activities in Punjab and added him to the list of fugitives sought for deportation.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) said he was the mastermind behind the assassination of Balwinder Singh Sandhu, a Shaurya Chakra awardee, in Tarn Taran district of Punjab in October 2020.

Who is Sandeep Singh Sidhu?

The NIA pointed out that Sandeep Singh Sindhu is currently an employee of Canada Border Service Agency (CBSA), who was promoted as Superintendent recently. Sidhu's address was revealed as 30980 Brookdale Court, Abbotsford, British Columbia in Canada.

New Delhi stated that Sidhu is a member of International Sikh Youth Federation (ISYF) and has been in contact with Pakistan-based Lakhbir Singh Rode and other ISI operatives.

He is allegedly associated with pro-Khalistan terrorists like US-based Gurjot Kaur who calls herself the widow of Pakistan-based Khalistan Liberation Force Chief Harmeet Singh aka Happy Singh. Sidhu also has links with ISI officers, according to a statement released by NIA.

Balwinder Singh Sandhu was conferred with Shaurya Chakra for fighting against militancy in the 1980s. Sidhu allegedly received the help of infamous gangster Sukhmeetpal Singh aka Sukh Bhikariwal in executing the assassination of Sandhu. Sandhu was against Khalistan referendums led by Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) in foreign countries.
