Israel bombs Lebanon, Gaza; more than 70 dead; north Gaza 'apocalyptic', says UN

Hours after a barrage of rockets from Lebanon struck northern Israel killing seven people, the Israeli forces responded with a barrage of airstrikes on Lebanon and Gaza.

According to the Lebanese health ministry, the strikes across Lebanon's northeastern farming villages killed at least 52 people and left several injured.

In central Gaza, AP quoted hospital officials as saying that around 25 bodies have been recovered so far.

In Beirut suburb Dahiyeh, Israeli forces claimed they hit Hezbollah weapons manufacturing sites and command centres. The had warned residents of at least nine places in Dahiyeh to evacuate. There were no immediate reports of casualties yet.

Post the rocket strikes on Israel from Lebanon, the US was pushing for ceasefire in both Gaza and Lebanon to scale down tensions in the Middle East ahead of the US presidential elections.

There was no immediate comment from Israel on the deadly strikes.

Hezbollah has been launching strikes on Israel in solidarity with Hamas soon after the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, which triggered the ongoing war in Gaza. On October 1 this year, Israeli forces launched a ground invasion of southern Lebanon for the first time since 2006.

Everyone at 'imminent risk' of death, warns UN

Top United Nations officials warned that the situation in the north Gaza Strip is "apocalyptic".

In a statement signed by acting UN aid chief Joyce Msuya, heads of UNICEF and the World Food Programme, they said that the "entire Palestinian population in North Gaza is at imminent risk of dying from disease, famine and violence", in the backdrop of Israel's military strikes in the region.

Calling on Israel to cease its assault on Gaza and “on the humanitarians trying to help", they urged all parties fighting in Gaza to protect civilians.

Israel's UN mission in New York did not comment on the statement.

UN agencies say that in Lebanon, Israel's ground invasion and bombardment has displaced 1.4 million people. According to Lebanese health ministry, more than 2,897 people have been killed and 13,150 injured since the war between Israel and Hezbollah began.
