Peanut the Squirrel was loved and adored on Instagram by its 540,000 followers. However, things took a wrong turn after the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) received complaints over public health concerns.
The orphaned squirrel was being raised by Mark Longo, who had put up videos of Peanut nibbling on waffles, jumping through hoops and flaunting costumes and hats on Instagram. Longo who runs an animal sanctuary had rescued Peanut seven years ago after its mother was run over by a car in New York City.
How did Peanut the Squirrel die?
Following the complaints, New York authorities on October 30 seized the squirrel from Mark Longo's home in rural Pine City near Pennsylvania border and euthanised it over concerns about rabies exposure. Another raccoon named Fred was also seized and euthanised.
The authorities said they had to euthanise the animals to test for rabies after a person involved with the investigation was bitten by the squirrel.
Slamming those who called the DEC, Longo said there is a special place in hell for them. "Internet, you WON. You took one of the most amazing animals away from me because of your selfishness," Longo posted, adding that he was in shock, disbelief, and disgusted. "For the last seven years, Peanut has been my best friend," he added.
Longo and his wife Daniela set up P'Nuts Freedom Farm Animal Sanctuary was opened in April 2023. The sanctuary has around 300 animals, including horses and alpacas.
Why are Trump supporters slamming Kamala Harris?
Following the tragic death of the squirrel, supporters of Donald Trump have slammed rival candidate and vice president Kamala Harris, holding her government responsible for the euthanasia.
Elon Musk who endorsed Donald Trump took to X, saying President Trump will save the squirrels. He also shared posts which claimed that the Democrats are prioritising killing squirrels over arresting burglars and drug dealers. In another post, he asked why the Democratic Party is so cruel.
