Ahoo Daryaei

Days after Iran arrested a female student who stripped down to her underwear t to protest 'abusive' dress code policing, there is no information about the woman's whereabouts.

What happened to Ahoo Daryaei?

Viral videos showed Ahoo Daryaei stripping at a Tehran university as some men in plain clothes bundle her into a car and drive off to an unknown location.

There is no official update on Daryaei's current condition and whereabouts. But Farjikhtegan, a local newspaper, reported that she was admitted to a mental health facility.

Amnesty International has urged the Iranian authorities to release Daryaei "immediately and unconditionally". It has sought an "independent and impartial" probe into the abuse allegations.

Reports said the Basij paramilitary force personnel harassed Daryaei at the Islamic Aza Univeristy in Tehran for not wearing the mandatory headscarf. Amir Kabar, a student media outlet, claimed that the woman was "beaten up" while being arrested.

Amir Mahjob, the public relations director at the university, claimed Daryaei had mental issues and was separated from her husband. She is a mother of two.

Amnesty International called on the authorities to protect Daryaei "from torture and other ill-treatment and ensure access to family and lawyer.”

Iran saw a massive protest in 2022 after a woman, named Mahsa Amini, died in custody after being arrested for violating the country's dress code. Following this thousands of women took to streets, removing and burning their headscarves.

Around 551 people died in the violent crackdown by the authorities. Daryaei's arrest has sparked concerns about a similar protest and Tehran is on alert as the world watches. Actress Katayoun Riahi and activist Hossein Ronaghi are among prominent figures who have come forward to support Daryaei.
