All eyes are on US vice president Kamala Harris and former US president Donald Trump as the country heads to elections on November 5. However, it's not just Democrats and Republicans in the fray.

Several other less known candidates from smaller parties are also taking part in the race for the White House. There are 22 presidential hopefuls who are from third parties or independents.

Jill Stein from Green Party

One of the known faces among them is third-time candidate Jill Stein, 74, from the Green Party. She raked in 1.5 million votes in 2016 and contested in 2012 as well.

The Harvard-educated doctor has called for an "economic bill of rights" to guarantee food, education, jobs, healthcare and affordable housing. Stein is also a climate change activist and campaigns for abortion and transgender rights.

Chase Oliver from Libertarian Party

Chase Oliver, 39, who is a Left member of the Libertarian Party, decribes himself as "armed and gay".

He says he ready to take over as US president but is not completely removed from reality. The former Democrat was opposed to the Iraq war and has slammed Israel war in Gaza. Oliver also advocates drug decriminalisation and scrapping of the Federal Reserve.

He is named in 47 ballots, higher than any other third-part candidates. He is also a write-in option in three others ballots and the District of Columbia.

Claudia de la Cruz from Party for Socialism and Liberation

Claudia de la Cruz has been urging Americans to embrace a socialist economy. She said she is running so that her party can play the "long game" and focused on laying the groundwork for the future.

"We don’t think in any way, shape or form that we could win without the masses,” she said. She said cutting the military budget by 90 per cent, the US can invest trillions of dollars into health care, free education, housing and student debt relief.

De la Cruz appears on the ballots of 19 states and is a write-in choice is 24 others.

Cornel West

Cornel West, 71, is an Independent candidate and a professor of philosophy at Union Theological Seminary. He has taught at Yale, Harvard and Princeton.

A vocal critic of Barack Obama, West initially sought to be the Green Party candidate. Green Party nominee Jill Stein was formerly West's campaign manager and contested for the party after West decided to run as an Independent. He has also criticised Joe Biden's Israel policy.
