As Donald Trump basks in the glory of getting elected as US president once again, the unpredictable Republican is already toying with the idea for a third term. However, the US Consitution allows only two terms for a president.

Addressing the House Republicans, the president-elect said he is ready to go for a third term with their support. "I suspect I won't be running again unless you say, 'He's good, we got to figure something else," Trump said. His controversial statement, however, received cheers from the attendants.
Thanking the Republicans, he said, "Isn't it nice to win? It's nice to win. It's always nice to win."

The 22nd Amendment of the US Constitution does not allow a person to run for President for the third time. This was ratified in 1951 following Franklin D. Roosevelt's four-term presidency during World War II, in a bid to put a stop to "elective monarchy".
If Trump wants to get this law repealed, he can -- but needs approval from the US House of Representatives and the US Senate with a two-third majority and ratification from three-fourths of the states.
Currently, the Republicans are a majority in the House and the Senate but that doesn't mean all of them would support Trump's initiatives.
