China stabbing spree: 8 killed, 17 injured in Wuxi; why youngster arrived at alma mater armed?

A 21-year-old student stabbed eight people to death and injured 17 others in the eastern Chinese city of Wuxi, police said.

Eight people were killed and 17 others injured when a 21-year-old student went on a stabbing spree at a campus in China's Wuxi on Saturday evening. The accused was detained by security personnel, Global Times said quoting official sources. 

The national media identified the exact location of the knife attack as a campus in Yixing of east China's Jiangsu Province. At around 6:30 pm local time, the accused youth started attacking people with a knife at the Wuxi Vocational Institute of Arts and Technology in Yixing. 

Global Times identified the perpetrator as one Xu, who is a 2024 graduate of the institute where the horrific attack took place. The state-run media portal said that the youngster was upset about failing exams which cost him a diploma. He was further angered by a dissatisfactory internship compensation her returned to his alma mater with a violent mind. This is believed to have led to the stabbing spree that shocked not just Beijing but the entire world.

According to the police department, a full-fledged investigation will be launched after the rescue efforts and other formalities at the crime scene are completed. Xu has confessed to his crime, the state media reported the probe team as saying. However, there was no information on whether the accused acted alone or was assisted in any manner. 

The incident comes just days following a hit-and-run incident where thirty-five people were killed and 43 others injured after a car drove into a group of people outside a sports centre in China's southern city of Zhuhai.
