US President-elect Donald Trump reiterated his expansionist plans once again ahead of his inauguration of his second term in White House.
Speaking to reporters at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida on Tuesday, Trump vowed military or economic action to add territories to the United States.
Economic force on Canada
Trump ruled out a military action against Canada and said he would use economic force to absorb the northern neighbour into the US. "Because Canada and the US, that would really be something."
Trump said the artificially drawn US-Canada border should be removed. "You take a look at what that looks like, and it would also be much better for national security," said the president-elect.
He pointed out that the US "derives no benefits" from spending on Canadian goods and military support. This comes as Trump threatened to impose 25 per cent tariffs on Canada and Mexico.
Annexing Panama Canal
Trump told reporters on Tuesday that he wanted to retake the Panama Canal. He refused to rule out whether military or economic force would be used. "We need them for economic security," he said, pointing out that the Panama Canal was built for the US military."
Earlier, Trump slammed former US President Jimmy Carter for giving up control of Panama Canal. However, Panama Foreign Minister Javier Martinez-Acha slammed Trump, saying the waterway will continue to be under Panamian control.
Purchasing Greenland
Trump said he would levy tariffs on Denmark if it refuses his offer to buy Greenland.
However, Denmark said Greenland was "not for sale". Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on Tuesday said Greenland was "not for sale", pointing out that it is not right for close allies and partners to fight each other with financial means.
Renaming Gulf of Mexico
Trump said his administration would rename the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America, which he said has "a beautiful ring" to it.
"That covers a lot of territory. The Gulf of America. What a beautiful name. And it's appropriate," he added.
