US President-Elect Donald Trump will be inaugurated on Monday, his second term in the White House. Trump, who will take the oath of office inside the Capitol at noon (US time), will formally take over the presidential power with the executive branch changing hands from the Biden administration to the Trump administration.
The new President is likely to sign over 50 executive orders on the first day of his presidency, NBC News quoted a person in his transition operation. These include promises he made during his campaign, reversals of the Biden administration's policies and a restructuring of the federal workforce.
Here is the list of things that Trump said he would do on day 1 of his presidency.
1) Mass deportations: Trump has promised "the largest deportation program in American history to get the criminals out" on the first day of his office. Stephen Miller, Trump's deputy chief of staff of policy, told Fox News that Trump would sign executive orders regarding mass deportations and a border closure almost immediately. The drive is set to begin on Tuesday morning and Chicago is likely to be the first target, with 200 officers being sent to carry out the operation.
2) Free some convicted Jan. 6 rioters: Trump has stated his plan to pardon or offer commutations to some of his supporters who were charged or convicted of attacking the US Capitol on 6 January 2021. Over 1,580 individuals have been charged criminally in federal court in connection with the incident, with over 1,000 pleading guilty. However, political observers feel Trump's actions would weaken US criminal justice system.
3) Revoking offshore oil and gas drilling ban: "We're closing the border and we're drilling, drilling, drilling," Trump famously said during a 2023 town hall in Iowa. Trump, who claims increasing U.S. oil production would drastically reduce energy costs, had promised to move quickly to revoke the ban announced by the Biden administration.
4) Ending birthright citizenship: Trump has also "absolutely" promised to end birthright citizenship on Day 1 of his presidency. He vows to change the right laid out in the 14th Amendment that would grant citizenship to anyone born in the U.S.
5) Fire Jack Smith: Trump vowed to fire Jack Smith, the special counsel who brought two federal cases against him "within two seconds" of returning to the White House. However, Smith has since resigned as special counsel after submitting his final report on the probes into allegations of interfering with the 2020 election and unlawfully retaining classified documents after leaving the White House.
6) Tariffs on Canada and Mexico: Trump has said one of his first executive orders would be to sign paperwork to levy a 25% tariff on all products arriving from Canada and Mexico. Market experts fear the American consumers could feel the consequences of the tariffs in the form of higher prices. Companies could respond to tariffs by buying a product in the U.S. rather than from another country.
7) End the Russia-Ukraine war: Though he has not detailed how he planned to do that, Trump has said that he would end the war between Russia and Ukraine in 24 hours if elected the President.
8) Cancel the EV 'mandate': Trump said he would eliminate Biden's so-called "electric vehicle mandate," that required auto manufacturers to cut greenhouse gas emissions by half in new light- and medium-duty vehicles beginning in 2027. Trump said, "the day I take office, I will cancel crooked Joe’s electric vehicle mandate."
9) End ban on the export of natural gas: Trump is against Biden's administration's policy of ending issuing new permits for exporting LNG. The policy aimed at combating climate change was termed "a hoax" by the incoming President.
10) Ban on transgender military service: Trump plans to reinstate a ban on transgender military service enacted during his first term in 2017. "With the stroke of my pen, on day one, we're going to stop the transgender lunacy," Trump said at a Turning Point USA rally in December. "And I will sign executive orders to end child sexual mutilation, get transgender out of the military and out of our elementary schools and middle schools and high school. And we will keep men out of women's sports."
11) Green cards for college graduates: Trump has been vocal about his idea of "automatically" giving noncitizens in the U.S. green cards when they graduate from college. "[What] I want to do, and what I will do, is you graduate from a college, I think you should get, automatically as part of your diploma, a green card to be able to stay in this country. That includes junior colleges, too," Trump said in the episode. "Somebody graduates at the top of the class, they can't even make a deal with the company because they don't think they're going to be able to stay in the country. That is going to end on Day 1," Trump said.
