Fateh review: Sonu Sood’s directorial debut is a mix of intense gore and shallow narrative

Sonu Sood’s directorial debut, Fateh, hits the screen with high-energy action and a socially relevant theme, but struggles to remain steady with the plot

Sonu Sood's first film as director opens with Fateh Singh (Sonu Sood), engaged in a brutal, bloody brawl with over 50 men, pausing mid-fight to sip on an ORS solution, quirkily. His mission? To track down a girl trapped in the nexus of fraudulent loan apps.

Khushi Sharma (Jacqueline Fernandez) plays the hacker, and Fateh’s ally—however, in an undercooked role. The villains, Raza (Nazeeruddin Shah) and Satya Prakash (Vijay Raaz), add the much-needed comical flair to the story. Shah roleplays the mafia kingpin with a tinge of dry humour while Raaz adds the edgy satire to the storyline.

And then there’s Fateh Singh himself. Who is he? Why is he so good at taking on so many armed men without breaking a sweat? The film barely bothers to answer these questions, leading to a lack of depth in his character.

The theme holds promise—cyber fraud and predatory loans are real issues that deserve attention. But the film does not dive deep enough. Instead, it mostly flaunts Fateh Singh taking down waves of bad guys, one improbable fight scene after another. At some point, the endless combat starts to feel like a filler— an unnecessary display of intense gore. The antagonists’ dialogues are sharp and engaging, whereas the lead’s script feels forced and eerie.

That said, the film has its moments. The action is well-shot, the villains are entertaining, and Sonu Sood clearly knows how to hold the screen. Yet, the film falls short of delivering the anticipated punch.
