Twitter recently released the biggest conversation trends of 2022 on its platform. According to its data experts, ‘The Great Restoration’ is one of the three big trends. ‘Healing the planet by healing ourselves’ is an idea that a large section of the twitteratti have spoken about this year. Twitter observes that people now focus more on themselves and they are expecting corporations to take the lead against big planetary challenges. Mass burnouts have made people “reprioritise wellness over corporate serfdom”.
And, there is a massive move to call out those corporations employing ‘greenwashing’ techniques. Greenwashing is the use of marketing techniques to portray an organisation’s products, activities or policies as environmentally friendly when they are not. The data shows that there were 158 per cent year-over-year mentions of ‘greenwashing’ on Twitter. Conversations are getting centered around issues like decarbonisation.
Twitter, however, observes that this digital environmental move is “becoming more kind than militant”. There was a 64 per cent year-over-year increase in the use of terms like “restoring” or “rebalancing”. Meanwhile, the microblogging site advises that lofty promises and green pretensions by brands will no longer work. “Get out there and do something that makes a difference—no matter how small,” reads Twitter’s advisory. “Publicly show transparency and traceability in your supply chain. Start helping customers repair old products to keep them useful.”
