Welcome move

Your cover story on best colleges of India was a timely gift for students across the country. I am sure it will help them choose the right courses and colleges (‘Engineering a renaissance’, June 18).

Technological institutions incorporating humanities and social science in their curriculum is a welcome move. Interdisciplinary courses will surely be useful for students.

It feels great to know that the IITs are expanding their humanities and social sciences programmes. It will help foster the imagination of students further.

I agree with Prof Arvind Panagariya that a lot of skill formation happens on the job. So, according to me, the future of work is not about college degrees. It is about job skills.

I am an ardent reader of your esteemed magazine, which I have been subscribing to for more than a decade. Your columns by eminent people are worth reading for its content and it also improves vocabulary. Your special issues on contemporary events are educative and enhances knowledge.

I feel the efforts and resources needed for the survey for India’s best colleges are enormous. I strongly recommend that a survey be carried out by THE WEEK-Hansa Research to find out as to how many people are making use of such surveys.

Parliament opening

I agree with V. Palanichamy that it would have been appropriate if President Droupadi Murmu had inaugurated the new Parliament building (‘Letters’, June 18).

However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi would have taken a well-considered and informed decision on this matter, and I am not competent to comment.

Being looked after

The Gorkhas are generally happy with India and Nepal (‘Himalayan slip’, June 18). As far as I know India imposes minimal restrictions on anyone seeking citizenship. Nepalese are seen in all cities in India, and they enjoy all privileges.

The Gorkha regiments are among the most decorated in the Army, but why depend on them always? Yes, we are proud of the Gorkhas, but what is wrong in forming new regiments and sharpening their skills with the best in the world.

Also, it is not safe to recruit people for defence and paramilitary forces from other countries. India’s relationship with Nepal is at its lowest point.

Go for it

I enjoyed the article by Anita Pratap (‘Soundbite’, June 18). Her writings continue to strongly influence creative writing. Though there are many writers and poets who have elegantly presented the English language in its funniest form, there are some misconceptions about split infinitives.

Split infinitives are a misnomer, since English does not really have them. We need to boldly go for it.

Don’t replicate it

The Congress should not replicate the Karnataka model in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh assembly polls, which are to be held later this year (‘It was a do-or-die battle for me’, June 11). Assembly elections are generally influenced by the local mood, whereas Lok Sabha elections are influenced by national interests.

M.V. Naidu,

I feel you have given Shivakumar more coverage than what he deserved. The Congress won handsomely against the BJP due to freebies, anti-incumbency, blunders by the BJP, a united front and good strategy. Its announcement at the fag end of the campaign to ban the Bajrang Dal was like playing with fire. But, in the end, it paid rich dividends—it could corner a large chunk of the minority votes.

It will be interesting to look at the realignment of political forces in Karnataka from here. The JD(S) will move closer to the BJP and may join the NDA. It remains to be seen how the Congress is going to deliver the freebies that it promised.

Need speedy justice

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been very lackadaisical about the problems faced by our wrestlers (‘Long bout’, June 11). The hapless wrestlers have been protesting for over four months demanding the arrest of Brijbhushan Sharan Singh, who is accused of sexually abusing women wrestlers.

When ordinary sex offenders across the country are promptly arrested under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the government’s ostrich approach to wrestlers’ complaints gives credence to Rahul Gandhi’s charge that Singh is under Modi’s protective shield.

With the issue attracting attention, a speedy and unbiased investigation will go a long way in establishing the majesty of the rule of law.

Interesting cover story

Your cover story on Narendra Modi’s popularity was interesting (‘The epoch maker’, June 4). It dealt with major events that occurred during the nine years of Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre. It gave me a deep vision about various executions by the Modi government.

Your ‘ten milestones of Modi’ and ‘ten controversies of Modi’ helped us to analyse the government in a proper way.
