Hail ITC

Your cover story on ITC was interesting (‘What’s next?’, February 11). I was happy to know that ITC has moved beyond cigarettes to become the most valuable Indian consumer company. The non-cigarette businesses of ITC accounts for majority of the company’s operational capital, which is good. I applaud the efforts taken by Sanjiv Puri in this regard, and I feel ITC’s brand building spree will remain unmatched for many more years to come.

ITC has successfully diversified its revenue streams and achieved leadership in FMCG (fast-moving consumer goods) segment. It is wrong to associate ITC only with cigarettes, even though it is the market leader in cigarettes in India.

I wish the group the best.

Peace and harmony

Arms companies are the only winners during a war; they reap the benefits (‘Endless turbulence’, February 11). Peace and harmony are the need of the hour. The only way out of this mess is to unite for a peaceful world, else a doomsday scenario is going to stand out.

Error

Your story on the Lucknow Cantonment (February 4), citing an incident in 1971, has drastically demoted Premindra Singh Bhagat VC from lieutenant general (the rank he held from 1967 till retirement) to lieutenant. This does call for an apology.

Deepak Banerjee,

We offer our sincere apologies.
