Over the past decade, much has been said about India’s potential as a leading global power. However, to secure this future, one must consider the past and present realities. Currently, press freedom is severely restricted, with those in power controlling the narratives and stifling the free flow of information. Once a pillar of democracy, the media has become a tool for the wealthy and powerful to accumulate more capital and political influence. With the rising income inequality, climate injustice, and religious intolerance, a pluralistic and equitable future is not a given. The future will have to be fought for with dissent, discourse and collaboration.
