Bangladesh's only coral island:
Saint Martin Island forms the southernmost part of Bangladesh.
Locally called 'Narikel Jinjira', it is the only coral island in Bangladesh.
The small island is just 3 km2 in size and is about 9 km south of the tip of the Cox's Bazar-Teknaf peninsula.
In the colonial era, it was named after the then Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong -- Mr Martin.
Following partition, it became a part of Pakistan. However, the Bangladesh liberation war once agains changed its ownership.
Around 3,700 Bangladeshis inhabitate the island and almost all are fisherfolks.
Coconut and paddy farming also sustain their livelihood.
