From Jigra to Indian-2: Box-office duds of 2024

Bade Miyan Chote Miyan

Ali Abbas Zafar’s sci-fi action flick opened to unanimous negative reviews, despite being one of the most expensive Indian films ever made at Rs 350 crore. The film had Akshay Kumar, Tiger Shroff, Prithviraj Sukumaran, Manushi Chillar and Alaya F in the lead.

Jigra

Vasan Bala’s Jigra, bankrolled by Dharma Productions and made on a budget of around Rs 90 crore, failed to make a breakthrough in theatres ending its box-office run at Rs 55 crore. The Alia Bhatt, Vedang Raina starrer was embroiled in controversies and negative media attention.

Indian 2

S Shankar’s anticipated sequel to the 1996 original (Indian), starring Kamal Haaasan was made on a staggering budget of Rs 150-300 crore. However, it seems like the audience had “Zero tolerance” for the vigilante action film that earned just Rs 151 crore.

Lal Salaam

The sports action film helmed by Aishwarya Rajnikanth and backed by Lyca Productions, starring Rajnikanth, Vishnu Vishal, and Vikranth, was shot on a budget of Rs 80-90 crore. Managing to earn a meagre Rs 17.46 crore, the film was caught in mixed reviews.

Malaikottai Vaaliban

Lijo Jose Pellissery’s film, starring Mohanlal, failed to live up to its hype leaving the audience disappointed, earning approximately Rs 30 crore against a budget of Rs 65 crore. However, many praised the filmmaker for venturing into the fantasy genre.

Nadikar

Lal Jr’s film was yet another colossal misfire. Tovino Thomas, Soubin Shahir, Bhavana, Suresh Krishna, and others appear in this meta-film dragged down by a weak script. The budget of the film was reportedly Rs 40 crore, though it only earned around Rs 5.39 crore at the box office.

Mr Bachchan

This Ravi Teja-starrer followed real-life incidents but failed to mint any real money limiting it to an est. Rs 7 crore, despite having a budget of Rs 70 crore.

The Family Star

This romantic action drama, featuring Vijay Devarkonda and Mrunal Thakur is no star, but a white dwarf. Made with a budget of Rs 50 crore, the film was a box-office bomb that did not even retrieve half of its budget.

Martin

A. P. Arjun’s Martin is next on the list, made on a budget of Rs 80-120 crore with a frail collection of Rs 25.30 crore. The Kannada-language action thriller starring Dhruv Sarja in a dual role was judged disappointing and a wasted opportunity.

Karataka Damanaka

Last on the list is Yogaraj Bhat’s social drama, which marked Prabhu Deva’s return to Kannada cinema after 17 years. The film received mixed-to-negative reviews, yet tanked in theatres.
