On Tuesday, his daughter Mercedes Kilmer confirmed pneumonia as the cause of his death.
He was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014, but later recovered.
Val Kilmer's career began on stage, eventually reaching Broadway with 'The Slab Boys'.
His legendary portrayals of Doc Holliday and Jim Morrison earned him the role of Batman in 1995.
Other notable films he did were 'Hear', 'The Prince of Egypt', 'Spartan', and 'Planes'.
Val Kilmer's illustrious career spans 80+ films and 15 television shows.
He is survived by his children, Mercedes and Jack, whom he shares with his ex-wife, Joanne Whalley.
