Amid the severe drought, Namibia is plannning to kill 723 animals to provide meat for its 1.4 million people.

The animals include elephants, hippos, zebras, blue wildebeest and buffaloes. Professional hunters will conduct the culling.

The drought in Namibia has dried out all their staple crops and killed their livestock, forcing them to look to wild animals as their next food source.

"Well-managed, sustainable harvesting of healthy wild animal populations can be a precious source of food for communities," Rose Mwebaza, director of the UN Environment Programme’s Africa office told the NYT.
