Listeria outbreak traced to sliced deli meat has resulted in two fatalities and 28 hospitalisations so far in the US

US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a warning about the serious listeria outbreak across various states

Most cases in the outbreak involved eating turkey, liverwurst, or ham

Listeria bacteria can cause listeriosis, a severe illness which is usually caused by eating contaminated food. It is the third leading cause of death from foodborne diseases in the US

Symptoms: Fever, muscle aches, fatigue, headaches, and seizures. Pregnant women might experience pregnancy loss or premature birth

The bacteria can easily spread in delis through equipment, surfaces, hands, and food

Refrigeration does not kill the bacteria, cooking meat to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit can kill germs

Pregnant people, individuals over 65, and those with weakened immune systems should avoid deli meat unless it is thoroughly heated
