New Delhi (India), July 29: International Tiger Day has been held on 29th July every year since 2010, when it was first established at the St. Petersburg Tiger Summit. This was done to raise awareness of the decline in the numbers of wild tigers, leaving them on the brink of extinction, and also to celebrate the important work of tiger conservation. India is among the few countries with a successful record in tiger conservation. According to the 2022 Census, there are 3,167 tigers in the country, accounting for nearly 75 per cent of the world’s tiger population. In Vogue Life magazine has come up with an innovative way to draw attention to tiger conservation by collaborating with Wildlife Photographers Collective India (WPCI) for an enriching video. https://theinvoguelife.com/

International Tiger Day provides a global forum for ideas on and around tiger conservation, and the protection of tiger habitats, so that nations worldwide can coordinate their efforts to save this most magnificent of wild animals. The day also raises public awareness and support for tiger conservation.

India has seen a gradual surge in the number of tigers, from 1,411 in 2006 to 2,226 in 2014. Besides efforts by wildlife conservationists and forest officials, experts cite nature tourism as one of the reasons for the roaring success of tiger conservation in India.

Wildlife Photographers Collective India (WPCI) has expert photographers and wildlife photography enthusiasts who conduct regular workshops and discuss the intricacies of cameras, equipment and frames, and In Vogue Life—in collaboration with WPCI—has rolled out a photo contest on wildlife and nature photography, which is ongoing till 10th August (https://theinvoguelife.com/photo-contest-form). The magazine will present the winning entry with an unparalleled opportunity to embark on a journey through the enchanting forests of Gir (Gujarat) or Pench (MP). The winner will get to experience the wild beauty of these destinations firsthand on this unforgettable tour.

Daljeet Singh, Managing Director, AIPl Group, emphasized the critical need for all stakeholders, including wildlife authorities and corporates, to actively participate in the protection and care of India's national animal, the tiger. On International Tiger Day, he highlighted the importance of collective efforts to ensure the survival and well-being of this iconic species. Singh underscored that tigers are not only a symbol of national pride but also play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance.

According to Kartick Satyanarayan, Founder Wildlife SOS, “Tigers continue to face significant challenges, including habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and illegal wildlife trade. To address these threats, we are working on multiple fronts: providing medical care for injured tigers, finding ways to reduce man-animal conflict situations, rescuing and rehabilitating tigers, and combating poaching. Our tiger rescue center is a key part of this effort, and we hope it will inspire greater awareness and support for tiger conservation.”

Mohit Aggarwal, Founder, Asian Adventures and Wildlife Tours in India, says, “Tiger tourism empowers communities to preserve forests. Stakeholders must however ensure that key landscapes are not misused.”
