The marvelous Grammy Awards event is planned to be held on the 2nd of February 2025, while the nominations were just recently announced on the 8th of November. Some of the nominations were undoubtedly expected given the successful performances of artists throughout the past year, while some others have left fans shocked.
The event will take place in Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California which is an area similar to the top Las Vegas music venues such as The Sphere or T-Mobile Arena. Crypto.com Arena is 950,000 sq ft or 88,000 m2 with a capacity of 20.000 people and it has already hosted many editions of the annual Grammy Awards event in previous years.
The Grammy Awards event is intended to evaluate the artists’ work in the previous year and culminates with the distribution of awards for the deserving ones. However, since the categories do not have unlimited nominations or awards, every year many great artists are left behind with 0 nominations. This, of course, disappointed them and their fans significantly.
Who got the most nominations?
The key name of the nominations was Beyoncé who got 11 nominations for this year which in total brings her number of nominations to 99 throughout her entire career. To name a few, she was nominated for the key categories like “Album of the Year Award”, “Record of the Year” and “Song of the Year”, amongst others. Other top nominees include Taylor Swift with 9 nominations, Billie Eilish with 6 nominations, Sabrina Carpenter with 6 nominations, Kendrick Lamar together with Charli XCX and Chappell Roan all got 5 nominations each, and Post Malone earned 4 nominations. The rest of the artists got less nominations than that.
Which artists deserved nominations but didn’t get them?
There is a group of artists who worked really hard the previous year and were expected to make it to the Grammy nominations, but as we already know couldn’t do it. This whole situation has caused a stir on social media with fans complaining about the nominations and their fairness. Some of the key artists that were part of this discussion include:
1. Ariana Grande and her album “Eternal Sunshine”
Fans could swear that Ariana’s “Eternal Sunshine” would make it to the “Album of the Year”, given the artist’s dedication towards it and the value of this album. “Eternal Sunshine” is an emotional and rather concise album which the fans worldwide absolutely loved, and it marks Ariana’s seventh studio album in her artistic career.
This album which was launched in March of 2024 went on to be reviewed by meta critics of the music industry who valued it highly in its music and content. Multiple sources also went ahead and gave it the title of Ariana’s best album to date, so naturally the disappointment came when it didn’t receive a nomination for the “Album of the Year” category at Grammys 2025.
2. Dua Lipa and her album “Radical Optimism”
Surprisingly, Dua Lipa also received zero nominations for her album “Radical Optimism”. In the past, Dua was actually a pretty common name for Grammy nominations, especially the Grammy Awards of 2021 when she won her “Best Pop Vocal Album” with her album of that time named “Future Nostalgia”. It was expected that for this year “Radical Optimism” would at least be part of the nominations, if not the winner. However, that was obviously not the case.
Dua’s fans were undoubtedly sad about this decision as they enjoyed and appreciated the new album tremendously. Unverified sources went on to say that even Dua herself was sad and disappointed with this outcome, and honestly no one can blame her after all the hard work on the album.
3. Megan Thee Stallion and her hit single “Hiss”
Another snub that not only surprised but shocked the audience was Megan Thee Stallion and her single “Hiss”. “Hiss” received so much love and attention worldwide and it was played millions of times on Spotify. Expected to make it to the “Best Rap Song” or “Best Rap Performance” category, Megan actually received zero nominations for the Grammy Awards 2025.
The conversation that this sparked in the media was huge, especially focusing on the challenges of Black women to gain the recognition they deserve, particularly in the rap industry which has been dominated by men since forever. Nevertheless, Megan did actually earn Grammy Awards previously, such as for example she got both “Best New Artist” and “Best Rap Song” for her single “Savage” in 2021.
Why Do These Snubs Matter?
The question that naturally rises in this case is why do these snubs even matter? Should we solely keep the attention of the artists that have already been nominated in these categories? The answer is that, despite knowing the artists who were nominated did great work, we should be aware of how the Recording Academy is making the nominations. The reasons behind the nominations, for example innovation versus commercial success, could include potential biases towards certain music genres and themes which are more on the experimental side.
