Important cases heard by the Supreme Court on Monday, April 21:
* SC told a petitioner that he does not need its permission to file a contempt petition against BJP MP Nishikant Dubey over his criticism of the apex court and Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna.
* While asking Delhi Police to take steps to arrest an accused behind a children trafficking racket in the capital, SC said the "situation seems to have gone from bad to worse".
* As it is, we are alleged of encroaching upon the parliamentary and executive functions," Supreme Court's judge B R Gavai said in an apparent reference to recent attacks on the judiciary.
* SC allowed the petitioner to withdraw a plea seeking a court-monitored probe into the violence in West Bengal over the newly-amended Waqf (Amendment) Act.
* SC observed the probe in relation to podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia was complete and said it would on April 28 hear his plea for the return of his passport in a case of distasteful remarks in a YouTube show.
* SC told a petitioner, who allegedly suffered disability due to the side-effects of Covid-19 vaccine's first dose, to file a suit for damages instead of pursuing his plea.
* SC directed former IAS probationer Puja Khedkar, accused of cheating, and wrongly availing of OBC and disability quota benefits in the civil services examination, to appear before Delhi Police on May 2.
* SC referred to a larger bench the legal issues stemming from a plea of BJP leader B S Yediyurappa, including the question whether a prior sanction to prosecute is needed under the Prevention of Corruption Act after a magisterial court order of inquiry.
* Calling it as sorry state of affairs, SC rapped the Delhi government over the delay in the premature release of prisoners.
* SC called for maintaining "certain decorum and reputation of the institution" after it was informed that a parliamentarian made remarks against the Chief Justice of India.
* SC directed the Rajasthan authorities to respond to a plea for contempt action for allegedly razing a property in Jaisalmer in an illegal manner.
