Ravichandran Ashwin has overtaken Australian legend Dennis Lillee and Sri Lankan veteran Chaminda Vaas in the list of highest wicket-takers in Tests when he scalped South Africa captain's wicket Faf du Plessis in the second Test in Pune on Sunday.
The Indian spinner, who matched Sri Lankan great Muttiah Muralitharan's feat to become the fastest to take 350 Test wickets in the first match against the Proteas in Visakhapatnam, is now placed in the 23rd position in the list of all-time highest wicket-takers in Test cricket.
Lillee took 355 wickets from 70 Test matches while Vaas reached the milestone in 111 matches. Ashwin reached the same in just 66 matches.
Ashwin had the best figures of 4 for 69 in 28.4 overs during South Africa's first innings in the ongoing Test in Pune.
India are chasing a historic 11th consecutive Test series win at home as South Africa struggle to avoid defeat by an innings in the second Test after following-on. The hosts bowled out the Proteas for 257 on the third day of the second Test, and skipper Virat Kohli enforced the follow-on.
