A vehement supporter of paid parental leave and extended child tax credit, White House adviser Ivanka Trump expressed confidence that these two proposals will achieve high-quality childcare in the United States, which will in turn benefit entrepreneurial parents. The Trump administration has recently proposed to create a programme mandating a few weeks of paid leaves for new parents. Ivanka was widely credited for pushing her signature plans to help the working and middle class families after her father and US President, Donald Trump appointed her as the adviser.
Speaking as a panellist at the Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES) in Hyderabad, she highlighted the importance of policies which can improve the condition of new mothers and fathers. “I think it is incredibly important to have policies that support the modern working families,” she said before proceeding to talk about the need for tax reforms. “...In tax reforms, the vast expansion of child tax credit recognising the massive investment the parents make into their families when wages have stagnated for so long. Working parents really need relief,” she said.
She said that enormous medical costs were making it difficult for American parents, mainly those who reside in rural parts of the country, to provide quality child care. She said the government was working towards addressing these issues.
“You will see some of the agenda coming to life through components of tax reforms and coming in to the new year, you will hopefully see it in the national paid family leave programme, that we are working hard to build coalitions of support for. The president included it for the first time ever in his budget this year—paid family leave, paternity, maternity and adoption. I am very encouraged by that step and will be working with Congress to try and pass what is a long overdue policy.”
Ivanka ended her two-day tour of India and left for the US on Wednesday night.
