Curtains are unlikely to fall soon in the incident that witnessed a dalit employee of mid-day meal scheme committing suicide in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's native Vadnagar in Gujarat a couple of days ago.
In a suicide note, Mahesh Chauhan had alleged harassment by three teachers. He committed suicide on February 6. He was administrator of mid-day meal scheme in Shekhpur, Vadnagar.
The police have registered a case of abetment of suicide against the teachers. The accused have been identified as Vinod Prajapati, Anaji Thakor and Momin Hussain Abbasbhai.
The body was fished out from a well in Vadnagar on February 6 and a suicide note was found from the deceased's daughter's bag.
Subodh Parmer of Rashtriya Dalit Adhikar Manch told THE WEEK that they plan to submit a memorandum to the collector next week. The Manch is headed by Jignesh Mewani, independent MLA from Vadgam.
In a letter shot off to education officer's office in Palanpur taluka, the Palanpur collectorate has asked to ensure that such incidents do not happen. The education officer has also been asked to issue similar instructions.
Only recently, a group of dalit leaders had submitted a charter of demands to Governor O. P. Kohli in Gandhinagar.
